SURAI: AI for smart surgical decisions

At Cyber Surgery, we have partnered with Vicomtech in the SURAI project to develop a new Surgical Decision Support System for our robotic assistant, ALAYA.

Surgical planning is one of the fundamental stages in image-guided robotic surgery, where the surgeon precisely defines the surgical approach and the positioning of the implants to be placed. It is becoming increasingly important to tailor surgical procedures to the anatomy and/or pathology of each patient, while taking into account the surgeon’s preferences.

The SURAI project, carried out in collaboration with Vicomtech, a research center specialized in Artificial Intelligence, Visual Computing & Interaction, has led to the development of several AI algorithms to automate the planning phase and adapt it to the specific needs of each patient.

This new system uses algorithms to analyze a patient’s anatomy and learns from previous surgical procedures. Combining these elements, it provides optimal, personalized surgical plans for each patient, incorporating the surgeon’s surgical preferences. Thanks to the results of this project, our Spine Robotic Assistant ALAYA can facilitate increasingly personalized surgeries and continue to deliver the best surgical experience in terms of efficiency, safety and predictability.

At Cyber Surgery, we led the project by defining the development phases and system architecture, identifying key information from surgical plans, and creating a robotic simulator that accurately reflects the real system. Vicomtech contributed its expertise in deep learning, medical image analysis, data science, and digital twin technologies.

This collaboration will enable further advances in the application of innovative technologies to assist surgeons in these procedures, maximize precision, and improve spine surgery using robotic systems. The combination of cutting-edge technology, medical expertise and government support lays the foundation for future significant advances in patient care.

The technology developed in this project also holds great potential to be applied to other clinical areas. It combines sophisticated data analysis algorithms with the unique subjective expertise of surgeons, demonstrating that this is the best approach for integrating new technologies into the operating room.

SURAI was funded through the RED.ES 2021 Call for Grants for R&D projects in artificial intelligence and other digital technologies and their integration into value chains. The initiative recognized the potential impact of the project and the role it could play in addressing the current challenges facing society.
